A faculty member at Catawba since 2002, Dr. Bitzer's teaching interests are in American politics, public administration, public policy, and the law, courts and judicial process area. His research interests are in Southern politics, North Carolina politics, campaigns & elections, law, and judicial politics.
Before working on his doctorate, Dr. Bitzer was a newspaper reporter and public affairs director at Clemson University. While at UGA, he was the one of five graduate student recipients of the university's Excellence in Teaching Award. He currently serves as an election and political analyst for several Charlotte television stations. In the 2011-2012 academic year, he will serve as the Swink Professor for Excellence in Teaching, the highest honor for classroom teaching at Catawba. Read more »

Dr. Gary R. Freeze teaches American history at Catawba, including both Survey of American History classes, American Diplomatic History, American Civil War, American Business History, The South, North Carolina History, and several special topics courses.
A faculty member since 1994, his specialties include North Carolina history, the Civil War and the American South. He also consults regularly with regional historical societies and museums on matters of public history. He is very active in historical organizations across North Carolina. He has been an officer in the Historical Society of North Carolina, chair of the state historic highway marker program, and the collegiate advisor to the Tar Heel Junior Historians Association sponsored by the state Museum of History. In 2009, he was named the Swink Professor for Excellence in Teaching, the highest honor for classroom teaching at Catawba, and has been awarded the Teacher of the Year Award by the student body on numerous occasions. A Catawba faculty member since 1986, Dr. McAllister teaches courses on Ancient Western World, Emerging Western World, History of Britain, Ancient Eastern Civilizations, and Historiography, along with several special topics courses.

Dr. Silverburg joined Catawba College in 1970, and has been active in professional opportunities as a political scientist; in 2011, he retired from full-time teaching at Catawba and was honored with the establishment of the Sanford R. Silverburg First Family Scholarship by many of his former students. He was one of twelve American faculty members to be selected by the American Center for Oriental Research in the Kingdom of Jordan for the 2004 program on "Teaching on Islam and Middle Eastern Culture."
