In Tune with Today
The world is changing rapidly. So is music. Spurred on by new modes of consumption — iTunes, YouTube, MySpace, and more — artificial boundaries among musical styles are quickly dissolving. Popular musicians are finally gaining recognition for their artistic achievements, a new generation of innovative educators is taking the place of retiring baby-boom music teachers, specialists in church music are blending old traditions with new elements to create a new world of sacred performance, and musical performers are finding new audiences with fresh approaches to time-honored repertoires.
At Catawba, we are right in step with these changes and take great pride in being In Tune with Today. We prepare our students to excel in the musically inclusive world of the 21st century by honoring the past, reveling in the now, and forging the future.
Judging from the attention we are starting to receive, we must be doing something right. For example, we are one of just fifty-onecolleges and universities listed as the Best Music Schools for 2013 by In Tune Monthly, who recognized for "its focus on music and business" and "its emphasis on contemporary music" and as "one of the fastest growing music programs in the country." Similarly, we are one of only forty schools listed in Music Connection's 7th Annual Guide to Music Education.
Our students and alumni are also being recognized. For instance, 2006 graduate Dennis Reed beat out nearly 1300 other college/university entrants from around the country to win the 9th Annual John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship competition. Proving that such success is no fluke, Junior Derek Daisey brought home second place in the 10th annual Lennon contest early this year.
Our MISSION: Your Music
All five of our major concentrations in music — music business, popular music, music education, music performance, and sacred music — serve the personal and career goals of our students. At Catawba, it's all about your music.
Our music business concentration educates students interested in becoming managers, agents, producers, and the like.
Our popular music concentration attracts talented young performers and songwriters from as far away as Texas and California.
Our music education concentration serves to train and certify aspiring choral and instrumental teachers (kindergarten through high school) for work in the public and private schools. Our music education graduates are readily accepted in to graduate programs throughout the country or to begin their music education careers in elementary general music, middle school band/orchestra, and high school band/orchestra and choral programs in area school districts. Our tradition of job placement for graduates is excellent, neighboring school districts typically contact us to find recent graduates.
Our performance concentration allows students to focus their music studies in voice or on a particular instrument with the goal of developing as a performer. This concentration is ideal for students pursuing private teaching and performance careers or who plan to go on to graduate studies in performance.
