Joe recently finished his Master of Fine Arts in Directing at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. While there he directed, acted and stage managed in various projects as well as taught as an instructor for the theatre department. During his time at Southern Miss he was actively involved in the KCACTF competition and was nominated for the Region IV SDC Student Direction for Rumors, the Irene Ryan for the role of Tateh in Ragtime and for stage management for Pride and Prejudice.
Joe has worked professionally as a dancer, actor, technician and stage manager with various summer stock and opera companies including Lone Star Rising, The Lost Colony and The Ohio Light Opera. Joe has also taught theatre, journalism, media technology and speech in the Florida public school system.
Joe hopes to enable his students to refine their creative vision and cultivate a personal artistic voice. He will also remind them that the pathway to becoming an artist is often filled with challenges, but it is the journey rather than the destination which offers the greater reward.
Q&A with Joe Hernandez
What is your particular interest in your field? Why?
My degree is in Directing but my passion and interest is Musical Theatre. I started off singing in a show choir while in high school and since then my love for music and theatre has always been there. My senior year in high school I was able to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway and I knew then that there was nothing else I wanted to do in life.
What is one thing that no one knows about you but you wish they did?
Had I not gone to graduate school for my MFA in Directing or not been involved in theatre, I would have gone to culinary school. I love to cook and often create new types of meals. I also am huge Alabama Football fan. Everyone knows this where I came from but no one here knows this information.
If you could be someone else who would it be and why?
This is hard, because I really love what I do for a living and I tell people all the time I living my dream. However, I would probably say that I would want to be a person that had plenty of money and time so that I could volunteer as a human rights activist or a missionary in Africa for a semester.
