campus wide alert

What to Bring, etc.

Welcome to Catawba!

We are so very excited to have you as part of the Catawba family and we look forward to getting to know you more by your attendance at one of the available Freshman Retreats. The Catawba Freshman Retreat experience is a special time in your college career as you’ll be transitioning from a high school student to a Catawba College freshman. We will be here to assist you every step of the way.

After you have registered for your Freshman Retreat, you will receive additional information via your Catawba email account so make sure you check it as the retreat date approaches.

When you arrive to campus for retreat registration, please make sure you bring a copy of your signed consent form. View a list of retreat check-in times and locations, depending on the retreat you're attending.

After the Welcome Assembly, you will be transported to Johns River Valley Camp located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains or to Black Lake Retreat Center in Asheboro. Transportation to and from the retreat is provided. Cell phone reception is poor in the mountains and your cell phone and use of the landline is for emergencies only. Should your parents or guardian need to reach you while you are at Johns River, the landline telephone number at the camp is 828-754-7067. You should have cell phone reception at Black Lake Retreat Center.

We will return to the Catawba campus around 3 p.m. on the last day of the retreat. There will be a brief commissioning service in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel upon our return to campus. Family members who can be present for the commissioning service are welcome. If you do not drive to campus, you should arrange for transportation to pick you up no later than 4 p.m.

Each retreat will offer a variety of activities including small group discussions, presentations, free time to socialize and get to know one another and other various fun activities. You will also get to meet some of the Catawba Faculty, Staff and Alphas who will assist with the retreat experience.

You should dress comfortably which means pack tee-shirts and shorts. Everything is very casual and comfortable. You may want to pack a bathing suit and water shoes if you are headed to Johns River and for Black Lake comfortable walking shoes.

NOTE: You will need to bring your own linens and towels. We recommend a sleeping bag and a pillow for easy packing. If you opt to bring sheets and blankets, the beds at both Johns River and Black Lake are twin size beds. You are also responsible for your own personal toiletry items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrush etc.

Don’t forget to bring a writing utensil. Paper and other supplies will be provided to you. You will not need to bring any additional money to retreat unless you choose to purchase something when off-site (if applicable).

We hope that you are ready for this new and exciting chapter in your lives and we look forward to seeing you soon!

NOTE TO THOSE ATTENDING THE AUGUST RETREAT: You may move into your residence hall room prior to departing for the retreat. The Office of Student Affairs in the Cannon Student Center will be open at 9 a.m. until noon to issue your room key. Also, August retreat attendees are permitted to spend Friday night in their residence hall room upon returning from retreat.
