Orientation Schedule for New Students NOT in the First Year Seminar

2017 Schedule for Non-FYS Transfer Students

Transfer students with more than 18 of credit, not including Early College Students.



Saturday, August 12

  • 8am-noon — Check-in for ALL new students—transfer, Early College, re-entering, commuter, and residents, including those who have already moved in:  Hedrick Administration Building

    Campus offices stationed in Hedrick Administration Building to assist check-in: 
    Admissions, Business Office, Financial Assistance, Student Affairs, Proctor Health Center, and Information Technology.

    After the “Get Acquainted Meetings” (around 2 pm) you may find help in these offices:
     

    In the Hedrick Administration Building: Admissions, Business Office, Financial Assistance, Registrar

    In the Cannon Student Center:
    Proctor Health Center, Student Affairs

    In Hoke Hall: Information Technology (IT)  

    Leonard Lounge in Cannon Student Center:
    Other student services (Academic Success, Career), Bookstore, Public Safety, Postal Services, Lilly Center

  • 11am-12 noon — “Backyard Barbecue”
    Lunch for all new students and families: Lawn at Keppel Auditorium.

  • 12:15pm — Welcoming Assembly
    For new students and their families:  Keppel Auditorium. 

  • Immediately following the Welcoming Assembly: "Get Acquainted" Meetings
    All new students and families meet with faculty advisors in designated campus locations.

  • Immediately following the "Get Acquainted" Meetings: Taking Care of Business
    Visit important campus offices (Financial Aid, Business Office, Admissions) if needed before leaving campus. IT services (for network/computing questions), Student Affairs (IDs), and the Proctor Health Center (for immunization/insurance questions) are also open.

  • 2-3:30pm - Catawba FYI: Cannon Student Center
    Representatives from Public Safety, Career Services and C2C (Catawba to Career), Student Academic Success services, The Lilly Center for Vocation and Values, the Library, and Chartwells Dining are available to answer your questions in the Leonard Lounge. The Catawba bookstore, postal services, and Student Affairs (counseling, residence life, disability services) are open and welcome visitors and questions.

  • 3:30pm-5pm - Commuter Connect I
    Check out Adams Loft, the Commuter Student Lounge located in Cannon Student Center, and meet other commuter students. Featuring Cheerwine and the Krispy Kreme/Dunkin' Donuts throwdown.

  • 4-5pm - Finding Your Way Around the Academic Computing System
    Learn how to register online, add classes, check your hours completed, and find information about classes, books, majors, and graduation requirements: Tom Smith Auditorium, Ketner Hall.

  • 7-9:45pm - Fun Fest!
    Caricature, cornhole, Mr. Cone Ice Cream, and more! Make your own dry erase board. Stanback Plaza.

  • 10pm - Living in the Community I
    Residence hall meetings for all resident students, beginning with an all-student meeting in Keppel Auditorium.



Sunday, August 13

  • 3pm - Information Meetings for Prospective Majors

  • Business Administration, Accounting, Economics/Finance, Management, Marketing, Information Systems, International Business, and Communications (including Integrated Marketing Communications and Sports Communications): Tom Smith Auditorium.

    Elementary Education and Special Education (Elementary Concentration): Room 108, Ketner Hall.

    History and Politics, Administration of Justice, Pre-Law, and Public Administration: Room 322, Hedrick Administration Building.

    Humanities (Literature, Writing, Religion, Philosophy, Spanish, French): Room 204, Hedrick Administration Building.

    Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematical Finance: Room 213, Ketner Hall.

    Music (including Music Performance, Music Education, Music Business, Sacred Music, Worship Arts, Popular Music, Choral and Instrumental Ensembles, and Music Minors): Williams Music Building (room 103).

    Immediately following the Information Meeting for all Prospective Music Majors/Minors: Individual auditions for all choral ensembles and private vocal instruction will occur at this time and again beginning at 7pm until finished. Audition room locations are in the Williams Music Building: All Instrumental Ensembles (Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Ensembles and private lessons) are in Band Hall (room 103); All choral ensemble (Singers, Chamber Ensemble, and Pop A Cappella) and private vocal lessons are in room 006.

    The music theory placement test will be administered at 3:30 in Williams Music Building, Room 214, following the Information Meeting, for all prospective majors and minors who have not yet taken it.

    Physical Education, Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Sport Management, Exercise Science, and Athletic Training: Room 109, Abernethy Physical Education Center.

    Psychology: Room 235, Hedrick Administration Building.

    Science (Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environment and Sustainability, and Allied Health Professions including Nursing, Pre-Medical, Vet, and Pharmacy): Room 107, Shuford Science Building.

    Sociology: Room 303, Hedrick Administration Building.

    Theatre Arts (Theatre Arts, Musical Theatre, Theatre Arts Education, and Theatre Arts Administration): Hedrick Little Theatre, Robertson College-Community Center. Musical Theatre students must come to this meeting first and then take the music theory placement test in Williams Music Building 214 after 3:30pm.

  • 4pm- Middle School and Secondary Education Prospective Majors and Minors
    (including Special Education: Middle and High School Concentrations): Ketner 108.

  • 5:15pm - 6:30pm - Dinner
    Cannon Student Center Dining Hall.

  • 5-6pm - Commuter Connect II
    Come to the 3rd Place Coffee House, have a brew, and meet some fellow commuters.

  • 6-8pm - Drop in to the "Coffee Break @ the 3rd Place Coffee House."
    Meet some new friends, learn about upcoming opportunities and programs, and maybe even win a prize!

  • 7pm - Catawba Soccer
    Frock Field. Get into the soccer spirit as the men's and women's soccer team play exhibition games.

  • 7pm - Auditions for Musical Ensembles
    For choral and instrumental groups or those interested students who have not yet auditioned. Audition Room Locations: All Instrumental Ensembles (Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Ensembles and private lessons) @ Williams Music Building Room 103 (Band Hall); All Choral Ensembles and private vocal lessons @ Williams Music Building Room 006.

  • 7pm - Auditions for Catawba Praise Ensemble
    Open to all interested students. Hoke Hall, Room 200.

  • 8pm - High-Stakes Orientation Bingo
    Peeler Crystal Lounge.

 


 

Monday, August 14

    Check in and prepare for advising and registration, Tom Smith Auditorium, Ketner Hall.

  • 3pm - Living in the Community
    All
    new transfer students meet in Tom Smith Auditorium for a Title IX meeting.  Break-out sessions follow.

  • 5-7pm - Dinner: Cannon Student Center Dining Hall.

  • 5-6pm - Phi Beta Lambda Interest Meeting, College Division of Future Business Leaders of America: Professional business fraternity, open to all business majors and other students with an interest in business. Tom Smith Auditorium, Ketner Hall.

    Center for Entrepreneurship and Experiential Development (CEED)
    Representatives from CEED Program will be on hand in the Atrium of Ketner Hall for an information session and refreshments. Open to any student interested in entrepreneurial ventures!

  • 5-6:30pm - Blue Masque Interest Meeting
    Open to all students interested in theatre. Hedrick Little Theatre, Robertson College-Community Center.

  • 7-10pm - Dance Auditions
    For all new students interested in dance placement for classes and ensembles.

  • 8 -10pm - Thinkfast Game Show
    Team trivia with a $200 prize for the winning team. Leonard Lounge in the Cannon Student Center.



Tuesday, August 15

  • 7:30-8:30am - Breakfast

  • 9:30am - Campus Employment/Work Study Meeting I
    For those students who register BEFORE 9:30am. Mandatory meeting for any student with work-study or campus employment. Hedrick Little Theatre.

  • 11am - Campus Employment/Work Study Meeting II
    For those students who register AFTER 9:30am. Mandatory meeting for any student with work-study or campus employment. Hedrick Little Theatre.

    Campus Employment/Work Study Meeting: This meeting is required for any student who plans on working on campus and students who do not attend a meeting cannot hold a work study or campus employment position during the 2017-2018 year. Attend only the meeting that corresponds to your availability from registration.

  • 11am-1pm - Lunch

  • 12:15pm - International Students Meeting

  • 4pm - Convocation
    Official opening of the 2017-2018 Catawba College Academic Year and pledging of the Honor Code. Omwake-Dearborn Chapel.

    Immediately following the release of Convocation:
    Community Party and Dinner: Trustees, faculty, students, and staff.

  • 8pm - Sustainable Catawba!
    Evening activities, Stanback Plaza.
