Dr. Karen Lucas

KarenLucas.jpgDr. Karen Lucas joined the Teacher Education faculty in August of 2013.  She completed her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in December of 2012.  She has been a classroom mathematics teacher in middle school in North Carolina and in high school in Tennessee.  She has also been an Algebra I Consultant for a Title I high school.  Just prior to coming to Catawba, she served as a System-Wide Secondary Numeracy Coach for Knox County Schools where she supported mathematics teachers by facilitating professional learning communities, presenting professional development sessions, providing individual coaching, and developing curriculum guides.

In 2011, Dr. Lucas gave presentations at NCTM national and regional conferences and at the annual Tennessee Mathematics for Elementary Education conference.  In 2012, she published articles in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NTCM) journals, Teaching Children Mathematics and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, and was a finalist for the 3rd annual NCTM Linking Research and Practice Outstanding Publication Award for a technology for the classroom article.  She served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Curriculum and Instruction, www.joci.edu.ecu, from 2010 to 2012 and has been reviewing manuscripts for NCTM journals since 2011.
