Program Information

The Catawba College Community Music Program provides several performance opportunities during Fall and Spring semesters for both private and class students. These "musical sharings" and recitals provide opportunities for students to present music that has been mastered to a performance level. The decision to perform in public is always made by the instructor, student and parent. Performing for each other enables students to gain feedback from their peers, feel more at ease when performing, and develop a confident stage presence.

Students are also encouraged to participate in the Catawba Community Wind Ensemble and/or the Salisbury Youth Orchestra, both housed on the Catawba College campus. Additional performance opportunities may include participation in the National Federation of Music Clubs and Music Teachers National Association events.

Masterclass/Studio Group Lessons

During the fall and spring semesters some private instructors may prefer to offer masterclasses (where students perform for a guest "master" teacher) or studio group classes (where students perform for each other and are coached on performance issues by the assigned teacher in an informal setting) to their students. The studio group lesson may be an addition to the semester lessons or may be given in place of that week's private lesson. Instructors will notify their students at the beginning of the semester if studio group lessons or masterclasses will be offered and when they will occur during the semester.

Tardiness & Missing Books
Students who are late for a scheduled lesson or forget their lesson books cannot be guaranteed their full lesson length.

Printed Music Purchases
Class piano students registered for Levels I-III are required to pay an annual materials fee ($25), specified in the tuition information section, to cover costs of music books, materials, and copy sheets. (Extra music costs may be necessary if fee is depleted before the end of the year). Adult class piano students, Songwriting class students, and students enrolled for private study on any instrument are expected to purchase printed music materials assigned by the instructor. Type and amount of these materials will vary with each instructor. Instructors will not provide photocopied materials as it is against Copyright Law.

Instrument Rentals

Students enrolled in strings lessons/classes may rent string instruments through the Music Office by calling (704) 637-4345.

Students receiving lessons/classes in Hoke Hall should park in the lot directly across the street (West Innes St.) from the Williams Music Building. (Campus Maps) Although parents may drop-off and pick-up their child in the parking lot behind the Music Building, they should NOT park/leave their car in the drive behind the building. This is a fire lane! Students performing or receiving lessons in the Music Annex on the corner of Brenner and Corriher Ave. should use the building’s parking lot.

Catawba Community Music recommends Dr. Robert Hallquist for piano tuning and maintenance. Call (336) 676-1473 or e-mail
