Julie Rhyne Chamberlain

Dr. Julie Rhyne Chamberlain
is an Associate Professor of Music and serves as the Director of both Sacred Music and Worship Arts at Catawba College.  A first generation college student, she earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, cum laude from Wingate University, Master of Music and Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and additional studies through the Hartt School of Music, Hartford, Connecticut.

A faculty member at Catawba since 1989, Chamberlain's teaching interests have evolved to include music theory, film music, world music and Delta blues.  She also enjoys teaching interdisciplinary courses in both the College Honors Program and the First Year Experience Program which have allowed her opportunities to travel with students to many locations including Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Ireland.

During her tenure at Catawba, Chamberlain has had the honor of receiving numerous awards including the Professor of the Year Award (2012; 2013), the Kenneth Clapp Tri-Delta Award for “dedication, devotion and dependability” and the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award for noble character. During the 2010-2011 academic year, she had the privilege of serving as the Swink Professor for Excellence in Teaching, the highest honor for classroom teaching at Catawba.

Chamberlain is affiliated with professional organizations including the College Music Society and the National Association for Music Education.  She also has served as 2nd Vice-President and Southern District Junior Counselor for the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs.

Chamberlain’s research interests include rethinking traditional piano pedagogy practices and she has presented her research at national and regional conferences.  An active pianist, she enjoys adjudicating piano competitions and festivals.  She has served on numerous school and community boards and is active as a musician in her community and church. 

Chamberlain is married to Catawba Alumnus, Eddie Chamberlain, and both are the proud parents of two daughters, Anna and Grace and two furry “boys,” Buddy and Dabo.  When she is not teaching at Catawba, she enjoys playing canasta, consignment store shopping and watching ACC sports (Go Tigers!).
