Rising musical star Ivory Layne visited the Catawba College campus to share insights with students and perform a concert of original songs with popular music student Emma Stoneberg.


Dennis Reed Performs at Democratic Convention
dennis2013.jpg2006 graduate Dennis Reed and current Catawba Young Artist in Residence Dennis Reed and members of his nonprofit organization Inspire the Fire performed on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, September 6th. They shared the stage with Carolina music legend James Taylor in what the DNC described as a "tribute to the dynamic convention host state."


Catawba Students Perform with American Idol's Jessica Sanchez
Fifteen Catawba music students performed as part of the gospel choir accompanying American Idol finalist and vocal phoneme Jessica Sanchez at the Democratic National Convention on September 5th.

Catawba Singers Rock the House
Opening convocations can sometimes be sleepy affairs but not at Catawba! New Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Jim Shepherd, and the Catawba Singers made sure of that. By the end of their rendition of "Praise His Holy Name," the entire chapel was on its feet swaying and clapping along.


Catawba Popular Music Students Take Nashville by Storm
Members of Catawba's Vernaculars All Stars closed the student showcase at the annual conference of the Association for Popular Music Education in Nashville this June. The performance also included talented students from the University of Miami, Belmont, and the Nashville's own Contemporary Music Center.


Dennis Reed on America's Got Talent
2006 graduate Dennis Reed and current Catawba Young Artist in Residence Dennis Reed reached the quarter finals in this summer's America's Got Talent. Appearing with members of his nonprofit Inspire the Fire, Reed's break out performance had AGT judge Howie Mandel proclaiming, "It's phenomenal!"


All 2012 Music Education Graduates Land Positions
Graduates of Catawba's Music Education degree concentration continue to enjoy a high placement rate in their field. In fact, all three of our 2012 graduates are already finding success. Melanie Hudson has just been hired as Band Director for North Wlikes Middle and High Schools, Brent Messenger is serving as Assistant Band Director for A. L. Brown High, and William "Doug" Crawford is a new general music teacher at Cox Mill Elementary You can't do better than that!


Catawba Student Interns at Nashville's Soundcheck
Where do you rehearse before you take your tour on the road if you're a major act like the Black Keys or Lady Antebellum? Where do store an 8-foot red solo cup stage prop if you're Keith Urban? There's only one answer to both questions: Soundcheck. Senior popular music and music business student Michelle Lescure knows firsthand, having just completed her internship at the Nashville branch of this important music industry company. It's just one of the topflight internships Catawba students regularly land.


New Popular Students Perform on Showcase
Each school year, Catawba's Artist Development Program kicks off with a New Artist Showcase featuring Freshmen and transfer students. The 2012 show spotlighted the college's largest incoming class, performing everything from indie rock and country to Irish pub sounds and even screamo.
