"I've been home schooled since my mom taught me how to read a picture book about a goat in a boat. I really treasured my home education experience and felt a bit intimidated as I started my search for a college.

As a life-long home schooler, I had a long list of things I was looking for in a college. I wanted to go to a school that challenged me academically and was accommodating to the individual questions and values that I had as a home schooled student. Most of all, I wanted to go a school where I truly felt that I was a part of a community.

Fortunately, I came to Catawba, an inviting, quaint locus of learning which met all of my initial qualifications and, two years later, I'm still having a great time here and I'm as involved as I can possibly be. I was recently tapped to serve as a Junior Marshal for the College during the 2007-2008 academic year. Junior Marshals are chosen from the junior class based on academic rank and are among the most honored students on campus. They embody the best of Catawba College both in academic achievement and service to the College community and they represent the College at formal gatherings throughout the academic year, including convocations, baccalaureate and commencement. By assisting the College Marshal, junior marshals assure that order and dignity are maintained during these occasions. This was an honor that I and 14 other Catawba juniors were privileged to accept.

I'm also an honors student, the current president of Alpha Psi Omega, a national honor society for theatre students, a Blue Masque senator, and I still find time to support other organizations and go to chapel on campus on Tuesday nights!"

Sociology Major; Theatre Arts and Dance Minor

"As a home school graduate, I knew I was looking for some specific things in a college. First of all, I wanted to attend a school where I wasn't just a number. Catawba's smaller and more intimate class sizes were exactly what I wanted!

I also wanted a school where I felt I could grow both academically and personally. The sense of community that we have here at Catawba is one like no other! The beautiful campus and small town location also contributed to my decision to attend Catawba.

I was very active throughout high school in both dance and theatre activities. Attending Catawba allowed me to continue being involved in both interests while obtaining my degree. Although I'm not a theatre major, I'm still very involved! I'm a member of Alpha Psi Omega, a national theatre honors society. I've also had the privilege of performing during all four of my years at Catawba, and choreographing the past three years with Catawba's Dance Ensemble.

There are far too many wonderful things about Catawba College to mention them all. I count myself as lucky to have had such a wonderful transition into my college career. Catawba was the perfect fit for me! Catawba has become my home and I will definitely miss it once I leave!"
