Blog: Catawba Singers Take on Europe

Adult Traveler Tonia Black-Gold of Concord
  1. What was your favorite experience on this trip?
“Getting to witness the students’ experiences and encounters in each stop was my favorite – new food, new currencies, new customs, new settings and how they saw that a smile, a polite demeanor and a willingness to try and accept could conquer difficulty.  Seeing these students in their first blush of discovering things outside their comfort zones made me recall this period in my own life.”

  2. How has your perspective changed on this trip?
“I realize with a new knowing and acuteness how much time and effort the director(s) and the choir members put into their singing.  The control Professor Oakley has over the students and the control they exercise over themselves and their voices is awe-inspiring.  It is more than a performance, a song, a solo – it is a personal and collective drive to excellence.”

  3. What have you learned through your experiences?
”In each country, I realized how important faith and religion were to the people we encountered in the cathedral and churches.  History incarnate – old and primal and deep – hallowed and accepted.  The buildings, the music, the traditions, the dress, the food all join to form the culture and keep it intact generation to generation”
