Blog: Catawba Singers Take on Europe

Senior Brad Boaz of Gastonia
  1. What was your favorite experience on this trip?
“Connecting with the German people through my home stay family and growing closer to my classmates as we work together to traverse the different European cultures.  Everything here is so new to me and so beautiful.  I cannot wait to share my experiences with those I love at home.  I am happy.”

  2. How has your perspective changed on this trip?
“The world as I viewed it before was so terribly small.  My perspective has ‘zoomed out’ to include so much more.  The countries I only read about in books are now populated with amazing people and customs and I am forever changed.  We are all one family on this earth.  I learned there are different ways to do things than the American way.”

  3. What have you learned through your experiences?
“I learned a lot about gothic, Romanesque and rococo architecture by experiencing wonderful examples of each every day.  I learned about the contributions of Hildegard and saw the dark stain of Dachau. Traveling Europe gave me a clear look into the human heart.  Maybe someday we will master our desires and flaws instead of living as slaves to them.  Directing our instincts instead of succumbing to them through hatred and war.  I learned that it is rarely worth my time to complain or to dislike a classmate.  Our polka party reminded me of how close we all are and how much fun we can have together.  I learned about music and why we sing it.  Music transcends language barriers and can be given freely to touch others anywhere in the world.  I learned about courtesy and respect for other cultures. “
