Black_Lake_016.jpgAsk residents of Asheboro and Randolph County what they can tell you about the Black Lake Retreat Center and you will likely get an answer such as, "What is that?"   Just across Highway 220 from the N.C. Zoological Park is what has been up to this point in time almost a "hidden treasure."

Riding past rolling fields and pastures that flank New Hope Road, one suddenly comes upon a lighted, paved parking lot that serves a state of the art conference center. It is the Black Lake Retreat Center and it features a beautiful wood-paneled great hall that opens onto a veranda that overlooks a tranquil eight-acre lake.

The new management of this Center is anxious to make it known that it is alive, well, and open for business year-round. It is available to area residents and those from afar who need a special place for a church gathering or retreat, a wedding, family outing or the celebration of a special occasion.

Located at 4709 New Hope Church Road in Asheboro just minutes from the Uwharrie Mountains and N.C. Zoological Park, the 306-acre property is managed by Catawba College under a 2012 lease agreement between the College and the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ.

The College welcomes inquiries about renting all or parts of the property for everything from a conference, an institutional or large family outing or reunion, a weekend or weeklong retreat, a camp, a wedding, or even a family vacation.

"Every effort is being made to make the operation of Black Lake Retreat Center a model of environmental stewardship and sustainability," explained Catawba College Chaplain and Senior Vice President, Dr. Kenneth Clapp, whose team oversees the Center's operation. "We want to preserve this beautiful enclave of creation as a place where people can get away, relax and experience the wonders of nature at the same time that they share meaningful experiences with friends and loved ones."

Black Lake Retreat Center's features include:

  • wooded acres surrounding a beautiful 8-acre lake, with walking trails, fishing, canoeing, paddle boating, volleyball, basketball, disc golf, and numerous other recreation opportunities;
  • a 5,660 square foot conference center with a spacious assembly room (maximum capacity of 120), two additional mid-sized conference rooms, a commercial kitchen, restrooms, and a large deck with rocking chairs and a view of the lake;
  • a large, multi-purpose picnic shelter that also overlooks the lake and includes picnic tables, a commercial kitchen and access to two restrooms with showers;
  • 4 rustic cabins with a maximum capacity of 32 people (8 per cabin);
  • a small country cottage, which will accommodate groups of 4 or less and includes a kitchen/dining area, and bathroom with a shower;
  • a worship/meditative area.

Although private and picturesque, Black Lake  is conveniently located in the "Heart of North Carolina."   It is just minutes from area attractions including the Museum of Traditional N.C. Pottery, Richard Petty Museum, N.C. Aviation Museum and Hall of Fame. There are also numerous small historic towns located nearby.

For members of the faith community, the mission of Black Lake Retreat Center is to offer a place of retreat and spiritual renewal to persons of all ages and levels of faith development. Catawba College is restoring and strengthening a valuable outdoor ministry resource of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ for generations to come. The College works to utilize Black Lake in the manner originally intended by generous donors, the late Mrs. Lavona Black and the late Mrs. Jacqueline Leonard.
