Catawba Announces Recipients of Prestigious First Family Scholarships

Scholarship BrochureTwenty incoming freshmen for Catawba College's fall 2008 semester have competed successfully and been awarded the college's prestigious First Family Scholarships. These students were among 73 who vied for the awards at a First Family Scholarship Weekends held in November and February on campus.

First Family Scholarships are the most prestigious scholarships at Catawba. Selected students are invited to campus to compete for scholarship awards which range from $16,000 to full tuition (approximately $22,290). These students participate in series of faculty interviews, writing an essay on why they aspired to be a scholarship recipient, and providing confidential written recommendations from teachers or administrators concerning their abilities, academic achievement, character and motivation.

The average GPA for those competing students was 4.102, while their SAT score average was approximately 1240.
 
Students receiving full tuition scholarships are Sarah Matulis of Berlin, Conn., daughter of James and Irene Matulis and a student at Berlin High School; Elizabeth Petrey of Lynchburg, Va., daughter of James and Paula Petrey and a student at New Covenant School; and Claire Robinson of Houston, Texas, daughter of James and Lisa Robinson and a student at Carnegie Vanguard High School.

Others receiving First Family Scholarships include James Abbott of Winston-Salem, son of Thomas and Anna Marie Abbott and a student at Westchester County Day School; Michael Bates of Salisbury, N.C., son of David and Angelica Bates and a student at North Rowan High School; Sarah Devlin of Candler, N.C., daughter of Ernest and Robin Devlin and a student at Enka High School; Megan Fields of Moore, S.C., daughter of Charles and Janet Fields and a student at Oakbrook Preparatory School; Christopher Fink of Hendersonville, N.C., son of Thomas and Jodette Fink and a student at West Henderson High School; Lori Fraley of Cleveland, N.C., daughter of Von and Cindy Fraley and a student at West Rowan High School; Bronwen Gainsford of Clemmons, N.C., daughter of Rodrique and Helen Gainsford and a student at West Forsyth High School; Kyle Hendrick of Eustis, Fla., son of Carl and Bethany Hendrick and a student at Tavares High School; Michael Krueger of Stony Point, N.C., son of Don and Linda Krueger and a student at West Iredell High School; Zachary McRae of Hendersonville, N.C., son of Darryl and Phyllis McRae and a student at West Henderson High School; Melanie Mishue of China Grove, N.C., daughter of Clifton Mishue and Joan Motley and a student at South Rowan High School; Sarah Morse of North Berwick, Maine, daughter of Steven and Melody Morse and a student at Noble High School; Kimberly Renspie of Tampa, Fla., daughter of Kenneth and Julie Renspie and a student at the Academy of the Holy Names; Sarah Robinson of Cartersville, Va., daughter of Bob and Melissa Robinson and a student at Cumberland County High School; Danielle Roman of Charlotte, N.C., daughter of Michael and Joan Roman and a student at David W. Butler High School; Danielle Smith of Charlotte, N.C., daughter of Craig and Nancy Smith and a student at David W. Butler High School; and Wallace "Brett" Underwood of Greensboro, N.C., son of Wallace and Kay Underwood and a student at Southwest Guilford High School.
