Catawba College Hosts Mathematics Competition Qualifying Event

Thursday, March 13th, marked the sixth year that Catawba College served as a qualifying site for the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics state contests

The top 10 percent of participants in Algebra I and Geometry competition advanced to the regional finals held either at UNC-Greensboro or UNC-Asheville. There were 111 students who took Algebra I and 65 students who took Geometry.  A total of 176 students, along with 20 teachers and parents, visited campus for the contests. Seventeen schools had students who participated, including local schools North Rowan High, Knox Middle, North Hills Christian, Sacred Heart Catholic, Gray Stone Day School and West Rowan Middle; while regional schools also sent participants, including Bandy’s High, Calvary Baptist Day, East Iredell Middle, Ellis Middle, Hanes Magnet Middle, Lincoln Academy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle, Mt. Tabor High, North Iredell Middle, Northview Middle, and Southwest Middle. 

There was one local student who advanced to the regionals in Geometry, Richard Scott, from Gray Stone Day.
