A Concert of Popular and Jazz Favorites by the Catawba Singers and Madrigals

The Catawba College Music Department will present the thirteenth annual Pops Concert on Friday, April 27, 2007, at 7:30 p.m., in the Peeler Crystal Lounge in the Robertson College-Community Center on the Catawba campus. "Hey, Look Me Over!"   is a concert of popular, jazz, and swing selections by the Catawba Singers and Madrigals, directed by Rosemary C. Kinard.

The Catawba Singers and Catawba Madrigals are both select choral ensembles whose members are chosen by audition. They perform for college and communityEvents, and for several major concerts each year. In addition, the Singers travel to area schools and churches to present concerts, and the Madrigals perform each year as special guests (Artistes du Jour) of the Carolina Renaissance Festival in the fall.

In this year's concert, the Madrigals will perform a hilarious arrangement of themes from famous operas, including William Tell, Carmen, Lohengrin, The Pirates of Penzance, I Pagliacchi, and more.

The Singers will begin their segment with a lively arrangement of "Hey, Look Me Over!" conducted by the group's President, Sacred Music Major Jared Gordon, who is a senior from Spencer. The Singers will also perform "Listen to the Music," "I Got Rhythm," and "Bubble Trouble," a spoof of music from the fifties. Several small ensembles will be featured, singing "When I Fall in Love,"   "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Hopelessly Devoted," "On a Clear Day," "You Raise Me Up," and "One Voice". The performance will also include solo selections by Jaclyn Chapman, William Van Wieren, Robyn Shute, Cecilia Runge, Brittany Morton, Meredith Fox, Matt Maser, Jared Gordon, Amy Guenther, Michelle McCaffrey, and Sheldon Rogers.

In their performance, the Singers will pay tribute to composers such as George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Alan Jay Lerner, Richard Rodgers, Burton Lane, Jason Robert Brown, Barry Manilow and Stephen Schwartz.

A special salute to our graduating seniors will feature Hannah Burleson, Meredith Fox, Amy Guenther, Jared Gordon, Michelle McCaffrey, Matthew Maser, Robyn Shute, and William Van Wieren in "One Voice". Chief Choreographer for the performance is Meredith Fox. Accompanist for the Singers is Tina Brown, and percussionist is Jennie Brooks. Dr. Robert Hallquist is serving as accompanist for soloists for this performance.

This performance will be the last concert at Catawba to be under the direction of Rosemary Kinard, who is beginning her "phased retirement" at Catawba in the fall. She has served as Director of Choral Music and Vocal Studies at Catawba College since 1988.

The performance is free and the public is cordially invited. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tables as well as general seating will be available. The doors will open at 6:45 p.m., so come early to get a good seat. For more information, call RoseAnn Pannell, Administrative Assistant for the Music Department, at (704) 637-4345.
