Fisher Street BandThe Fisher Street Band, which consists of four Catawba College students and one Salisbury musician, will release its debut CD, "In the Background of the World,” Saturday, Feb. 24.

To celebrate the release, the band will offer a free performance at Las Palmas on Fisher Street in downtown Salisbury beginning at 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 24. At that event, copies of the Band's CD will be available for only $5 each and the first 20 people who purchase a CD will receive a free t-shirt or other band merchandise.

The Fisher Street Band has performed together since last summer. Band members who are Catawba College students include Justin Dionne of Salisbury, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter; Jennie Brooks of Monroe, drummer; Therron Causey of Charlotte, saxophonist;  and Eric Finland of McLean, Va., keyboard and songwriter. The only non-Catawba member of the band is bassist Dan Hazard of Salisbury. The musical talents of four other Catawba students also are featured on the Fisher Street Band's CD, including senior Jessica Dugger of Gainesville, Fla., junior Guerin Piercy of Swannanoa, and sophomore Sara Johnson of Charlotte, all do-op girls or background vocalists, and junior Jared Knight of Salisbury on trumpet.

Fisher Street BandAccording to Dionne, the songs on the band's new CD "all started out acoustic" and "all of them are kind of personal accounts and observations."  Now with the band, the song, "Dream," has become "a poppy ballad," while "Kiss" has become "an internal conversation."  "The Fall" is "a hopeful ideal," Dionne continued, "while "Proclamation," which he wrote, is "like my manifesto on life — very personal to me." "New Shoes" is another track on the CD written by Finland which he describes as "an upbeat ska/soul/rock song" one which he could not have engineered without the help of his fellow band members.
