Two longtime members of the Catawba College Board of Trustees, both elected to their trustee posts by the Southern Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, were honored Sunday, Feb. 17. Wade H. "Hamp" Shuford, Jr. of Hickory and Claude Shuford Abernethy, Jr. of Newton were presented with Catawba's inaugural Campus Ministry Church/College Award at a dinner held in Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus.

ShufordShuford, a 1950 alumnus of Catawba, was recognized for his 48 years of services as a trustee of the College. Dr. Ken Clapp, Catawba's Chaplain and Senior Vice President said of Shuford: "From the time of graduation from Catawba College until the present you have lived your life in such a way as to consistently and enthusiastically demonstrate the fourth virtue engraved upon the seal of Catawba College, service. You have worked for the betterment of the communities in which you have lived and you have championed the needs of those less fortunate."  Clapp also noted Shuford's belief in the role faith plays in "the developing lives of Catawba students and in the importance of the heritage of this institution."  He said Shuford had "sought to keep strong the ties between the Church and the College" and "generously supported programs and efforts to that end."

AbernethyAbernethy, who has also served 48 years on Catawba's Board of Trustees, was recognized for his work on key committees of the board. Clapp said Abernethy had chaired the sub-committee on investments, served as vice-chairman of the board and served as chairman of the board for one year. Clapp called Abernethy  "a valued advisor to seven presidents" and said "both you and your family have provided generous financial support for the College."  Abernethy, a lifelong member of Corinth Reformed Church of Hickory, was also recognized as "a faithful representative of the College to the church constituency" and one who had given generously of his time to advise many non-profit and charitable organizations.

Barry and Clara Leonard of Greensboro were recognized for their gift to establish a new scholarship fund at Catawba. Monies from that fund will be used to assist deserving students interested in pursuing a career in the ministry. Barry Leonard is a 1965 alumnus of Catawba who serves on its Board of Trustees.

Brent and Jackie Lawrence of Jamestown, N.C., the parents of the late Brenna Lawrence, a 2002 alumna of the College, were lauded for their efforts to raise monies to establish a scholarship fund in their daughter's memory at Catawba. This scholarship will be awarded to students who are committed to a life of service to benefit others.
