IMG_3815.JPGCatawba College will welcome spring with the addition of a new sculpture on its campus.

David Boyajian's "Cotyledon" was installed on campus March 17.

"Cotyledon" was among the sculptures that are included in the 2017 Salisbury Sculpture Show, and this is the third year that Catawba (and all of the other higher education institutions in town) has participated in the annual show.  Catawba's participation in the show is a very affordable way to bring public art to the campus.  The sculptors submit proposals and then a sculpture selection committee (which a representative from the college sits on) actually picks from all of the submissions to narrow the selections to around 20 final sculptures that will be displayed as part of the annual show.

Boyajian's sculpture will remain in place through spring 2018.  Catawba had another sculpture by the Connecticut sculptor on display in 2015, "Dancing Milkweed V."

And for the curious, the word, "cotyledon," (kädəˈlēdn) is a botanical noun which means an embryonic leaf in seed-bearing plants, one or more of which are the first leaves to appear from a germinating seed.
