Family of Deceased Alumna to Host Scholarship Benefit

June 27, 2005

Category: Academics, Alumni

The family of late Catawba College Alumna Brenna Lawrence ’02 will host a scholarship benefit July 16 at the home of her parents in Jamestown.  One hundred percent of the proceeds from this second annual benefit will go toward establishing the Brenna Lawrence Endowed Scholarship at Catawba.

Brenna, a 1997 graduate of Greensboro Page High School, earned a degree in biology and minors in both religion and philosophy from Catawba.  While a student, she was a member of two honor societies, Beta Beta Beta and Phi Epsilon, served on the Catawba College Honor Court, was a cheerleader and a member of the College Chapel Choir. In 2000, she was listed in “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” In 2001, she presented her senior research project at the 62nd annual meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists and won an award.

Brenna suffered from several auto-immune diseases, including Polymyositis, Raynaud’s Fibromyalgia, and other ailments.  Tragically, her medications left her susceptible to other diseases, and on April 14, 2004, at age 24, she died from a hospital-borne staph infection.

The July 16 benefit, which begins at 6 p.m., will be held at the home of Brent and Jackie Lawrence at 404 Thornwood Drive in Jamestown. It will include a cookout, a silent auction, raffles and games.  For more details or directions, contact the Lawrences at 336-454-5095 or visit the website www.spreadingwings.org.
