Former Catawba Coach, Father Tennis," Dies

PhotoScott "Scotty" Mitchell, who coached men's and women's tennis at Catawba from 1987 until 1989, and thereafter coached only women's tennis at the college into the late 1990s, died June 12.

A native of New Jersey, Mitchell earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Dartmouth College. He was a veteran of World War II, serving for three years during the conflict, two of those overseas in the South Pacific with the 5th Army Air Force. He worked as a financial officer with General Electric and had moved to Salisbury from Cincinnati, Ohio to work at that company's Salisbury facility. He retired from General Electric in 1983 after a 37-year career.

He was predeceased in 1998 by his wife, Mary Marks Mitchell. The couple had six children who survive them, including Martha M. Grote of Columbus, Ohio; Scott H. Mitchell, Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; Beth A. Mitchell of Salisbury; Stuart D. Mitchell of Cincinnati, Ohio; R. John Mitchell of Delray Beach, Fla.; and Keith R. Mitchell of Salisbury.

Lyerly Funeral Home in Salisbury is handling arrangements for Coach Mitchell.
