Dr. Walter K. Hood of Salisbury, a Catawba faculty emeritus who taught art history at the college for 19 years, died August 6 after a period of declining health. He is survived by wife Elizabeth "Liz" Welch Hood, a 2000 Catawba alumna, and son David of Hawaii. Arrangements, which are being handled by Summerset Funeral Home in Salisbury, are incomplete at this time.

Dr. Hood was best known for his murals and paintings, many of which focused on religious subjects. During his lifetime, he had exhibited his works in America and Europe and had published 11 books and taught at several colleges. One of his last art exhibitions centered on his 14 murals that depicted the final hours of Jesus in the "Stations of the Cross."  He had painted these murals over a period of about 30 years.
