In Memoriam: Dr. William L. Russell

April 13, 1935 - August 10, 1913

RussellDr. William L. Russell '57 of Lexington, professor of physical education and chair of the department of physical education and athletics and member of the college faculty since 1991, died Saturday, August 10.

He is survived by wife Suzanne and two adult children, Ashley and Scott, and grandson, Tyler.

Dr. Russell's funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 14 in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on Catawba's campus, followed by interment at Bethesda Church and Cemetery in Aberdeen, N.C.

Dr. Russell earned his undergraduate degree from Catawba, his master's degree from UNC Chapel Hill, and his doctorate from UNC Greensboro.

RussellPrior to joining the Catawba faculty, he served for 17 years as coordinator of health, physical education and athletics in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. He had also served as a physical education teacher and coach at Aberdeen High School in Aberdeen; as principal of Hoffman Union School in Hoffman and Vass-Lakeview Elementary School in Vass; and as a teacher, university supervisor for student teachers, coordinator of the men's intramural program, and academic advisor at UNC Greensboro. He had also served as an adjunct professor at Gardner-Webb College.

Dr. Russell was honored by Catawba in April of this year, as the recipient of the Trustee Award for Outstanding Contribution to the College. The award is given annually to the person or persons judged to have made an outstanding contribution to the institution with the recipient selected by a vote of the faculty senate.
