IMG_3359.JPGA free half-day football camp for elementary and middle school kids ages 6-13 held Friday, July 8 at Catawba College attracted 225 youth. Catawba’s head football coach, Curtis Walker hosted the free camp through his Curtis Walker Football Camps for the fourth consecutive year to a new record attendance.

The camp for students who might not otherwise be able to participate in a camp experience of this type due to their family’s income was a service outreach to the local community. The first year, 12 kids participated; the second, 91; and last year, 200 kids.

Walker said he was "a little afraid" of what year 4 would bring, but was ready and willing for these kids to "bring it."

Local sponsors provided lunch and covered costs for t-shirts for the campers. Chick-Fil-A and Dairy Queen provided lunch and dessert, and D.J.’s Restaurant, and Ken Washko Dentistry in Spencer helped with camp expenses.

The camp registration began at 8 a.m. on Friday on the concourse underneath the Shuford Stadium bleachers.  The camp took place between 9 a.m. and noon on the football practice field.  Some 25 coaches and players from the Catawba Indians squad assisted with the camp.
