Members of the Catawba College community gathered in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on April 23 to celebrate achievement. The occasion was the annual Awards Convocation.Scheduled the day after Earth Day, the awards distributed were eco-friendly, made of Catawba blue, 100% recycled glass. They symbolized the college's commitment to environmental responsibility and are a reminder to the recipients to promote a greener, more sustainable lifestyle.

Fourteen Catawba College students employed their unique gifts and talents in service to others as interns with tax-exempt nonprofit organizations during the summer of 2012. Funding and coordination for the program were provided through the college's Lilly Center for Vocation and Values. While these students clearly benefitted from the experiential learning opportunities offered through such internships, they also filled vital roles within the programs they served.

Catawba College associate professor of communication arts Dr. Tim Moreland and his friend "Chester," a six-year old Australian Shepherd, fly dogs to safe havens for Pilots N Paws animal rescue. Chester has been Moreland's co-pilot on rescue flights since his own adoption in Sarasota, FL.

Catawba College Alumnus Glen Lloyd has been named the new Assistant Director of Multicultural Programs at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota. Lloyd's duties will include overseeing the Mentoring for Student Success Program, advising the Diversity Leadership Council, and developing outreach methods to the campus community.

"New Media is a high maintenance class," says Communication Prof. Cyndi Allison Wittum. "If it's in a book, then it's already 'old' media." Wittum does use a text that covers some of the history of media and includes some sociological and psychological studies related to media use. She thinks students need to know the background in order to understand the new technological world.

"People love passion," says Cyndi Allison Wittum, a Catawba College communication professor. "I always tell my students that everyone will forgive you almost any sin if you are enthusiastic and excited about what you're doing." Wittum will be blogging this summer for Sears on a "Grilling Is Happiness" project which includes some of the top grilling and barbecue writers across the country. Sears is hosting a corporate blog to help consumers learn about and enjoy cooking outdoors.

Charter members of the Catawba College Chi Omega chapter of the national Communication Association Lambda Pi Eta honor society welcomed four new members to the organization this year. New members included Rebecca Heffernan, Allison Justice, Melanie Mishue, and Leslie McMillan. They received stamped certificates and honor society pins.

"The Feather: Cat-U Radio" is now on the Internet, with some Catawba College students hosting and producing the broadcast and others performing during it. "The Feather" joins other virtual radio stations that can be tuned in via the Internet. The broadcast is recorded weekly and uploaded to the Internet. It showcases the talents of Catawba College students and provides another media outlet for students in addition to the online student newspaper...

Even as they were being honored Saturday, Oct. 22, as recipients of Catawba College's Distinguished Alumnus Awards, twin brothers, Benjy and Brad Hamm '86, were paying tribute to their alma mater and to future generations of students who would be shaped by their college experience as the Hamms have been.
