    Tar Heel Boys' State at Catawba College June 16-22

    Catawba College will host the 74th annual session of Tar Heel Boys' State June 16-22. This is the tenth consecutive year that the weeklong event has been held on campus and approximately 300 participants, all rising high school seniors from North Carolina, are expected.     Former Catawba Coach, Father Tennis," Dies

    Scott "Scotty" Mitchell, who coached men's and women's tennis at Catawba from 1987 until 1989, and thereafter coached only women's tennis at the college into the late 1990s, died June 12. A native of New Jersey, Mitchell earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Dartmouth College. He was a veteran of World War II, serving for three years during the conflict, two of those overseas in the South Pacific with the 5th Army Air Force.

    Celebs Turn Out for NSSA Event at Catawba College

    ESPN's Basketball Color Commentator Dick Vitale was just one of the sportscaster/sportswriter celebrities in Catawba College's Goodman Gym on June 10. He was on hand for the 54th annual NSSA Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and was this year's NSSA Hall of Fame sportscasting inductee.

    Catawba's Incoming First-Year Students Can Select Their First-Year Seminars through July

    Until July, incoming first-year students can select their top three choices from among all of Catawba's unique first-year seminars. First-Year Seminar (FYS) is an integrated comprehensive discussion and seminar course that approaches an interesting topic from multiple perspectives. All first time freshmen take FYS. Not only do students enjoy learning about various topics with their peers, but there are common elements across all First-Year Seminars.

    74th Consecutive Session of Tar Heel Girls State to Be Held at Catawba College

    June 9-15 will be the 74th consecutive year of Tar Heel Girls State, and for the twelfth year, Catawba College will host the weeklong session. At the annual event, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of North Carolina, several hundred girls from across North Carolina, all high school juniors who are academically in the top third of their class, will participate.     Twelve RCCC Students Selected as Noyce Summer Interns

    Twelve Rowan Cabarrus Community College students have applied and been accepted as the first cohort of Noyce Summer Interns. Funds from a $1.45 million National Science Foundation grant provide monies to pay the tuition for these students to take a three credit hour online Education course through Catawba College and to allow each of them a paid summer internship in a STEM occupation.

    Catawba Student, Miss Queen City 2013, Will Compete in Miss N.C. Pageant

    Catawba College student TyNia Rene' Brandon of Charlotte, who was crowned Miss Queen City 2013 in January, will compete for the title of Miss North Carolina June 14-22 in Raleigh. TyNia, the daughter of Tyrone and Sharon Brandon, is a senior at Catawba, pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre. During the Miss Queen City Pageant, she sang an Italian aria entitled "Star Vichino" and won the talent portion of the pageant.
