Sustainable Catawba: Meeting Minutes

Leadership & Clubs

Ultimately, sustainability affects all segments of the campus. Knowing that, we have established "Sustainable Catawba," which brings all of those working on sustainability efforts to the table. Campus organizations and departments which are part of the sustainability effort include student organizations:

	Environment Catawba Outreach (E.C.O.) ECO is the campus environment club. ECO strives to educate and encourage the Catawba community and the local region to be good stewards of our planet by promoting environmentally sound habits and techniques. ECO works closely with the Center for the Environment and other clubs on campus to raise environmental awareness and plan events and community service opportunities. Membership is open to all students.

	Green Education Outreach (GEO) GEO is a team of student leaders at Catawba College who have been charged with the task of helping to make the Center for the Environment's ambitious educational efforts even better. They are eager to develop and strengthen their own teaching and collaborative leadership skills.

	Student Government Association (SGA) The SGA seeks "to promote unity among the student body within the college community, to promote a quality educational environment, to protect common interests, to create an atmosphere of free discussion, inquiry, and self-expression, to insure the personal freedom and general welfare of the student body, and to instill in the student body the principles of self-government."

	American Chemical Society (ACS), Student Affiliates Catawba College's Chapter of the American Chemical Society, a 2007-2008 National Honorable Mention Chapter, has received awards and recognitions. ACS student chapters are organizations for undergraduate chemical science majors. Members participate in a wide range of programs and activities that enhance their college experience and prepare them for successful careers.

	President's Climate Commitment Catawba College joined close to 300 other colleges and universities nationwide in supporting the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

	Tri-Beta National Biology Honor Society Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is a society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research.

	Facilities Department and Environmental Services The Environmental Services department plans, implements and maintains environmental sustainability, waste reduction and recycling programs for the college community. This includes educating faculty, staff and students in new and innovative ways to promote good ecological practices.

	Center for the Environment The Center works to educate students and the public about environmental stewardship and sustainability. It involves students, faculty and staff, and its many partners and volunteers in programs and activities that promote sustainable solutions in the community, the region and beyond. The Center is strongly involved in area environmental matters and lends its leadership and expertise on issues ranging from air and water quality to land preservation and sustainable development. The sustainable facility serves as a model for green building practices and is an effective teaching tool as well as a nationally recognized example of the sustainable use of the earth's resources.

	Chartwells Dining Service Chartwells is proud to be Catawba's foodservice management team and knows that campus dining is an important part of the a student's college experience. Chartwells strives to make the campus community's dining experience the best it can be by providing good, nutritious food in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.
