The cast includes Madison Alwran as June, Haley White as Alice, Francine Green-Thomas as Weezy, and community member Jenny Hubbard as Bib. The production team consists of Zac Hunter as Technical Director, Jennie Conner as stage manager, Teresa Greene as scenic designer, Evan Moreno as costume and makeup designer, Ila Deese as lighting designer, and Julia Rockwell as props master.
Alabaster is a darkly comedic drama about art and the power of healing. “Alabaster is about an artist who lost her entire family (and nearly died herself) in an Alabama tornado. Three years since the devastation, June has isolated herself, along with her goats Weezy and Bib, on what remains of her family farm. June, who suffers from agoraphobia and crippling PTSD, is covered, from head to toe...with scars. She gets up every day and feeds the goats, weeds the garden, and picks up her paintbrush. Alice, a world-renowned photographer, has come to take pictures of June for a series on women with scars. But Alice, a lesbian photographer from New York, is carrying scars of her own and is desperately trying to outrun her own pain. The sexual tension between June and Alice is immediate and ever-present. But what they need from each other transcends the physical. What does it mean to be truly “seen?” How do we pick up the
pieces? How do we move forward? A play about women. About art. About healing.” (Cefaly).
The Blue Masque, a student-run social club with a love for the arts, has stated that one of its main goals is to put on a show every season. Last season, they performed Natural Shocks by Lauren Gunderson, which was directed by Hayley McCann. All the productions staged by the Blue Masque are student-led, directed, acted, and designed. The shows are open to the public, allowing the cast and crew to showcase their work. Alabaster has one of the largest sets a Blue Masque production has had in a while, and the club is eagerly anticipating the growth it will achieve with future shows.
Alabaster is directed by Camden Trimmer. Trimmer has said that the process has been “absolutely amazing.”
"This show is hard," added Trimmer. "Difficult topics, hard realizations, but this is one of the most important stories I've ever told. What does it take to understand someone? What does it take to heal? And most importantly, why is there a talking goat and why is she so sassy? Teetering the line between comedy and drama, I hope you give this show a chance and come for a great night."
Tickets are $15 for adults 18-55, $10 for adults 55+ and non-Catawba students, and $5 for Catawba students, faculty, and staff. All proceeds support the Blue Masque.
