Turnbull came to Catawba following three years at Louisburg Junior College. Turnbull began the program at Louisburg and after a 1-12 record in 1995, the Hurricanes were nationally ranked over the following two seasons, reaching as high as seventh in 1997. He also taught at Louisburg and was named Chair of the Faculty Senate in the Fall of 1997.
Craig Turnbull was previously the head coach of the Catawba College men's soccer program. In his first season, he guided Catawba to a 12-9 record and its third straight SAC Championship. With his help, Catawba advanced to the SAC Tournament Championship match.
Turnbull also served as an U-18 Club coach, winning a state championship in 1998 with the Capital Area Green Caps Premier Team. He is the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association Olympic Development head coach for the '86 Boys team. He is also Director of Coaching for the Rowan Rage and is on the Board of Directors of the RCYSA. He began his coaching career at East Carolina, serving as an assistant from 1993-95.
Graduating magna cum laude from East Carolina University in 1993, Turnbull earned a degree in physical education. He earned a master of education degree from ECU in 1995.
While at East Carolina, Turnbull was a three-year captain at East Carolina University, earning second team All-CAA honors in 1993. He holds the ECU record for most career starts. He was a four- time Texas-Gulf All-Academic team member and earned the Texas-Gulf Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Award in 1993.
He and his wife, Kim, reside in Salisbury. They have a daughter, Elena Paige, and a son, Eric Riley.
