Confidentiality and Counseling
When a student engages in personal counseling, that communication with the counselor is private and protected. The information shared in counseling will not be shared with anyone outside of counseling without the student's written permission, except when in the judgment of the counselor such disclosure is necessary to protect the student or someone else from serious harm. Counselors must take action when there is a clear and present danger that someone's life is at risk. Current child abuse must be reported by the counselor under North Carolina State law. There is also a possibility that a judge/attorney could legally request specific information about one's counseling should one be involved in a court case. The counselor may consult with additional healthcare professionals to improve counseling services to the student without violating confidentiality. Please know that the counselors take privacy very seriously and will do all that is possible to protect it.
