Please respond to ONE of the essay prompts below. Essays should be 400-600 words in length:

  1. "Scholarship" is the first word on Catawba College's seal. First, describe a specific scholarly pursuit that has had a significant impact on your development. Perhaps this was a class, an academic project unrelated to school, significant reading you conducted on your own, or some other academic endeavor. Then, explain why this scholarly pursuit was so formative or had such a great impact on you. Finally, reflect on what "scholarship" means and how you plan to engage in scholarship at Catawba College.

  2. "Character," which might be defined as the qualities a person possesses, also appears on the Catawba College seal. For this essay, choose a fictional character from a film or a novel who faces a difficult choice. Briefly describe the situation in which the fictional character finds him - or herself. Then, explain the choice the fictional character makes, whether or not you agree with the choice, and what this choice reveals about his or her "character". Finally, reflect on what "character" means and how your characteristics would be deployed at Catawba College.
