First-Year Experience

Incoming freshmen often have two main concerns:

  1. Will I make friends?
  2. Will I succeed in college classes?

Our First-Year Experience (FYE) program makes sure the answer to these questions is YES!

At Catawba, you'll discover who you truly want to be. This starts early with the Freshman Retreat, where incoming students get to know one another, meet faculty and begin developing into successful college students. You'll also participate in an FYE seminar course teaching you college survival skills and supporting your college transition.

The FYE is an integrated set of programs that introduces students to the interconnectedness of liberal and professional education and increases their engagement with the social and intellectual life of the campus community.

Through the development of critical thinking, reading, and writing capabilities, students begin their preparation to succeed in professional careers, to make meaningful contributions to the communities in which they live, and to continue to learn throughout their lives.

If you have questions about any part of the First-Year Experience, please contact Dr. Sheila Brownlow at (704) 637-4102 or e-mail
