Catawba College's First-Year Seminar Program helps students make a smooth transition from high school to college, introduces students to the academic values of the Catawba College community, and facilitates the development of strong bonds among students and between students and faculty.
Catawba students may choose among Seminar sections that feature as many as 16 different topics; however, every section emphasizes the development of critical reading and writing skills. The Seminar instructor serves as the academic adviser for the students in her/his section.
Incoming freshman (including early college) and transfer students with fewer than 18 hours of college credits are required to take one of the Seminars in his or her first semester at Catawba. While the goals are consistent across all sections, each Seminar deals with different topics and content.
