REMAIN AT CATAWBA  |  Take the Pledge  |  Ask a Question

  1. Is Orientation mandatory for freshman?
Yes! All new students attend Orientation.  If you have a conflict, please call your admissions counselor or the Student Affairs Office to make arrangements prior to move in day!

  2. Is Orientation mandatory for parents?
Parents and family members are not required to attend Orientation. However, Orientation sessions will be available to welcome you to our family and answer any questions you might have!

  3. Is there anything I should be doing to get ready for Orientation?
Before Orientation, make sure you’ve registered an uploaded necessary paperwork in the Pre-Orientation Portal on CatLink! Need help getting there? In the weeks leading up to Orientation, keep an eye on your Catawba email for more updates and introductions!

Summer Orientation Only

  1. Is the Freshman Retreat mandatory?
This is an optional program for Summer Orientation only.

  2. Do I have to stay overnight during Orientation?
For Summer Orientation Sessions I & II (June) Only:
All new students are required to stay in one of our on campus residence halls during the overnight Orientation Sessions I & II. We believe that the overnight experience helps new students to envision their on campus experience and is an exciting way to meet the rest of the incoming class! If you have concerns about accommodations within the residence halls, please reach out!

Summer Orientation Session III Only (August) :
Residential students attending Orientation Session III in August will move into their assigned residence hall room for the fall semester. Commuter students who attend Session III will not stay on campus overnight, as they will be commuting each day.

  3. Will my Summer Orientation roommate be my roommate for the fall? Will I be staying in my room for the year?
During summer orientation, you will be randomly matched with a roommate to help you meet as many people as possible! All students will be staying in two of our most popular residence halls, so you may not be in the building that you will move into in August. Students will be able to request a roommate if they meet someone during the Orientation session.

  4. When does Summer Orientation end?
Summer Sessions I & II (June):
We have students coming from all over, so we want you to be able to plan for travel accordingly. The Commissioning Ceremony will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., concluding the scheduled events for the day. Prior to departing campus, you'll need to do a brief check-out process between the hours of 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. to return your residence hall key and ensure that all you have completed all items on the Orientation Checklist.

    Summer Session III (August):
The August Orientation (Session III) will conclude at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, August 14th. Prior to departing campus, be sure to stop by the Student Affairs Office anytime between 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to ensure you have completed your Orientation Checklist items and pick up your Welcome Week schedule/packet.

  5. What do I do after Summer Orientation?
After Orientation, it’s time to countdown to Move-in Day on August 15! The move-in process will take place between 8 a.m.–1 p.m., then we’ll kick-off Welcome Weekend at 1 p.m. There will be tons of events and opportunities on campus that weekend and through the first week of classes!
