Q&A with Carmony Hartwig

What is your particular interest in your field?  Why?
Science is a source of steadfast excitement for me, so being enthusiastic about biology comes naturally. I thrive on connecting biological concepts with other disciplines and everyday phenomena. My area of expertise is Molecular Parasitology, with a focus on the mechanism of endoperoxide-class drug activity in Plasmodium falciparum; one of five protozoan species that results in human malaria. Each year more than 225 million new cases of malaria are reported and approximately 800,000 people succumb to this devastating disease, primarily children of sub-Saharan Africa. Although I thoroughly enjoy my research on P. falciparum, I sincerely hope that one day we can dramatically alleviate the malaria plight.

What is one thing that no one knows about you but you wish they did?
That I am so enamored with life in Salisbury! I am constantly inspired and encouraged by the fantastic community we have here at Catawba College; it is unlike any place I have ever experienced and I am really excited to be a part of it.

If you could be someone else who would it be and why?
I am very happy with my life and my job – I get to do what I love everyday! So I would not want to be anyone else, however, I do wish I could gain special insight from or have conversations with people such as Rosalind Franklin, Maya Angelou, Charles Darwin, Daniel Hale Williams, Henrietta Lacks and Georgia O’Keeffe to name an important few. I have always admired their bravery and important contributions to humanity.

Share with me a couple of items that are on your bucket list.

  • To travel to Europe and Korea.
  • To be fluent in another language (Korean, German, Italian).
  • To learn how to play the piano or the guitar.
  • To be the lead vocalist in a band.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
When I see trash in the recycling bin or recyclable items in the trash.

If you could only have one thing to eat, what would it be?
I run on coffee and more coffee. Not a food though ... maybe tofu? Or chocolate!
