Dr. Richard Macri has professional interest "in the synthesis and testing of new drugs, specifically towards treatment of diabetes and fibromyalgia." If chemistry had not won over his academic passion, he would have done something with computers. "I'm a computer geek," he explains. "I spent four years in the Marine Corps where I was an aviation electronics technician." His biggest accomplishment to date, he shares, is graduation from Marine Corps Boot Camp. That achievement made him realize, "I can do anything after that."

Dr. ChaMarra Saner serves as the Director of the Science & Mathematics Academic Resource Center and co-chair of the Equity, Diversity, Justice and Inclusion taskforce in conjunction with her role as Assistant Professor at Catawba College. As a first generation college student, she received her Doctoral degree in Chemistry from Louisiana State University and began Catawba College in spring of 2015. Her research focuses on factors that have been attributed to the shortage of interest from the current generation in pursuing jobs in the STEM fields and how to bridge those gaps through service- learning opportunities. For the past six years, Dr. Saner strives to create positive learning experiences for students both inside and outside of the classroom not only by promoting meaningful connections among the course material but also with the members of the community.
