Harry Chapin Scholarship Endowment Campaign
Remember When the Music
Harry Chapin was an extraordinary individual. Not only was he a masterful writer of memorable story songs like "Taxi," "Mr. Tanner" and "Mail Order Annie" and an unforgettable performer who captivated audiences around the world, he was also a committed humanitarian and tireless champion for the poor, hungry, and disadvantaged. He co-founded World Hunger Year (now WHY Hunger) and performed many of his live dates each year for a wide range of charities.
In his song "I Wonder What Would Happen to This World," Harry sings:
Now, if a man tried to take his time on earth And proved before he died what a man's life could be worth Well, I Wonder What Would Happen to This World
Harry showed us what would happen to this world with his own example. It would become a better place to be.
Catawba College is honored to have received permission from the estate of Harry Chapin to establish an endowed scholarship in his name for a new generation of performing songwriters. Specifically, the scholarship would go to talented young individuals who have already demonstrated a commitment to social activism/community service to study music at Catawba.
We are delighted that Harry's daughter, the singer-songwriter Jen Chapin, has offered to serve as honorary chairperson for the campaign to endow the scholarship.
On Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York's Times Square, a kickoff event was held to endow the scholarship.
Please help us fund the Harry Chapin scholarship by giving a tax-deductible contribution to the endowment. It is a wonderful way to help ensure that Harry's legacy will continue into the future. Please encourage other Harry Chapin fans to do so as well. Any amount is greatly appreciated.
If you would like to make a contribution by check, please mail it to the following address and write "Harry Chapin Scholarship" in the Memo/For line.
