Catawba College Pre-Med Profiles
Katelyn DeZego '17
Biology Graduate; Employed as an EMT; Headed for Medical School
"To me, Catawba felt like home. I'm from a very small town, and unlike most of the people I grew up with, I did not want to leave the small rural town that I loved. The people I met at Catawba were so welcoming and the professors were incredibly personable that I did not feel as if I had left home. I so enjoyed the honors classes I was a part of. While each one was so different, I was able to expand my mind in a fun and often unexpected way. "
While at Catawba, DeZego did two summer internships: an REU at UNC Charlotte and a P2EP program at the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) in Kannapolis. Both were valuable experiences for her. In the REU, she researched the bacteria Vibro vulificus and worked with its survival in human serum. At NCRC, she worked with compounds in broccoli that have anti-cancer properties.
