Foreign Language Student Profiles

“The Catawba College Modern Foreign Language Department equipped me with all I needed to survive a semester abroad. With a supportive faculty and immersive courses, this program not only fine-tuned my skills in the French language, but also introduced important facets of French culture which helped me understand the history, people, and ‘joie de vivre’ long before I stepped off the plane.  In the future, I would spring at the opportunity to pursue a career where I can use the foreign language skills I’ve practiced at Catawba.

“Once I got to know Madame Langhorne and experience her classes, I began to enjoy it a lot more and found that I really wanted to learn the language and more about the culture.  She’s fantastic.”

Spanish and Business Administration Double Major

“I graduated from Catawba with degrees in Spanish and Business Administration.  After working in the dental field as an interpreter for one year, I made a career change and started as a Spanish teacher at Salisbury Academy in 2016. Thanks to Dr. [Michael] Wilson, who informed me of the Spanish position at Salisbury Academy, I am completing my second year and pursuing a master’s degree in teaching foreign language.”

Spanish Major; Now an International Environmental Lawyer

“I chose a Spanish major because I love the language and learning about other cultures. I spent a month in Costa Rica with a Catawba program and later undertook a summer internship in Argentina.  Both were great experiences, adding to my education both academically and personally.  A Spanish major will help my career in International Development, especially working in Latin American countries.  I believe that knowing another language and understanding another culture is crucial to success in today’s world in any field.”
