What advice would you give to incoming students?
I would tell incoming students to definitely become involved on campus and around Salisbury. There is a research stating that in order for student growth to take place, students need to actively engage in their environment. (Astin’s Involvement Theory) Catawba College is engaging with unique experiences for every single person.

What is your favorite activity on campus?
I love all the events that Catawba has. Seems like there is something for everybody. There are so many events and clubs at Catawba College. If you do not like the clubs, you can create your own.

Which Catawba core value (Scholarship (academic pursuits), Character (ethical behavior), Culture (exposure to artistic endeavors), and Service (campus and community outreach) resonates the most with you and why?
Referring back to Astin’s Involvement Theory, I believe Service resonates with me. As a first-generation undergraduate student, it was hard for me to become involved in my first few years and it reflected in my grades and my social life. When I finally became involved in several different societies and a psychology research lab, my grades improved rapidly and I was able to become more socially confident. If I did not begin to reach out to the different services that were available to me on campus, I do not believe I would have graduated with my Bachelor’s degree and move on to my Master’s degree.

If you could have brunch with anyone, who would it be and why?
Living: Family. Everybody gets homesick, no matter how old you are.
Dead: David Foster Wallace. He's brilliant, and I loved his "This is Water" speech.

If you could tell your freshman self one piece of advice, what would it be?
You belong there. You are sitting in a seat that was chosen for you.

Why should students come see you?
Things are really crazy, strange, exciting, and pretty scary your first year at college. I've been there. Come and get my advice and a listening ear.

The friends you make on your first day/semester/year do not have to be your friends forever

What advice would you have to incoming students?
Two things: One, go to every single class. Professors notice who is there and who is participating. Two, get involved with something on campus. Find a club, organization, or group that you want to get involved in. You will find friends and, more importantly, a sense of belonging.

What is your favorite activity on campus?
As a student, it was exploring new places around campus and meeting new people. As a professional, it is supporting students with what they are involved in. Those could events such as athletic games or performances.

What Catawba core value (Scholarship, Character, Culture, Service) resonates to you and why?
I would say Character. Being the person who you are affects the other three. By having excellent character, one will have a high respect for their studies and their community while positively affecting the culture around them.

If you could tell your freshmen self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Like life, college is the adventure you make it. Mistakes are fine as long as you learn from them.

Why should students come see you?
Transitions, like the one from high school to college, are tough. I can help you with the transition and can help you with strategies to help you be successful in the classroom. I also enjoy traveling, reading, gaming, and sports.

Where’s the best place you’ve travel to?
Internationally, the Tuscany region in Italy. Domestically, the mountains of NC.
