Life in Salisbury

Catawba College is located in historic Salisbury, nestled in the beautiful Piedmont region of North Carolina. Downtown Salisbury and Rowan County host many diverse events, where you can enjoy live music, food trucks, and amusement activities at the College Night Out or First Friday events held throughout the year.  Or, head on down to Lee Street Theatre to watch friends perform in a theatre performance.

No matter your taste in food or your interests in pastimes, there is something for every Catawba student in Salisbury.

Salisbury, North Carolina is a foodie’s dream city, featuring a bevvy of restaurants serving any type of food you could imagine. Catawba students have just a short drive to Salisbury's many restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries. Get authentic food from places like Mykonos, Sabaidee, Yummi Banh Mi, and more. There are also plenty of hidden gems to savor like Hap’s Grill or Palms Café. Ready for dessert? Sink your teeth into a delicious cupcake at Abigail's Bakery. Don’t forget about the night life with trivia and music at DJ’s Restaurant or karaoke on the rooftop bar at Go Burrito!

The Salisbury area is home to many things to see! Catch a show at the Lee St. Theatre, a movie at the historic Gem Theatre, or check out some art at Water Works Visual Art Gallery or Rail Walk Studios & Gallery! If you’re more of an animal enthusiast, check out Lazy 5 Ranch or Tiger World, where you can get up close with all kinds of animals!

Downtown Salisbury is home to many exciting stores, shops, and boutiques where you can let your inner shopaholic run wild. Get some new clothes, decorations, gifts and jewelry all just minutes from campus! Home to many southern styles, you’ll be looking “Salisbury chic” in no time!

If you’re looking for more outdoorsy activities, there are tons of options just a short drive from campus! Go to an Intimidators baseball game, visit Eagle Point Nature Preserve, or spend a day at the lake at any of the local hotspots in the area. Or have a fun filled day at one of the local parks like Dan Nicholas Park, which features its own mini-golf courses, gem mine, carousel, and zoo!


Through Volunteer Catawba, students have access to some of the best opportunities to volunteer and serve both on campus and off campus in the local Salisbury-Rowan community and beyond. Whether it is getting involved in campus initiatives, volunteering at the local food pantry, or conducting a donation drive for the local animal shelters, there are plenty of ways to make a difference! And there are even more opportunities with just a little bit longer of a drive from campus.

Location really is everything! The Catawba College campus is located just a short driving distance of many points of interest, including:

  • CONCORD (30 MIN) - Revel in the roar of a NASCAR event at Charlotte Motor Speedway or shop one of the region's biggest outlet malls at Concord Mills.
  • CHARLOTTE (45 MIN) - Cheer on the Carolina Panthers or chill out with friends enjoying live music at NC Music Factory.
  • CAROWINDS (1 HR) - Test your fear of heights or quench your thirst for thrills on record-breaking roller coasters and other rides at Carowinds themed amusement park.
  • MOUNTAINS (2 HRS) - Hike the Blue Ridge Parkway or ski and snowboard in the mountains
  • COAST (3.5 HRS) - Walk the beautiful beaches that are less than four hours away
  • RALEIGH (2 HRS) - Visit the state capitol
