General Education Assessment and Review (GEAR) Committee

The General Education Assessment and Review Committee (GEAR) assesses the effectiveness of the General Education Program. In particular, this committee:

  1. reviews proposals for courses to fulfill Foundations & Skills and Perspectives requirements;
  2. recommends learning outcome assessment procedures in regards to General Education offerings;
  3. reviews Outcome Assessment Reports (OARs);
  4. provides suggestions to faculty for improving their assessment of student learning with respect to General Education; and,
  5. considers the revision or deletion of General Education requirements as well as learning outcomes for General Education courses and makes recommendation to the faculty on these matters.

Operating Procedures

  1. All faculty teaching a course tagged with a general education attribute are required to submit an Outcome Assessment Report (OAR) to GEAR, using the online reporting system (http://www.catawba.edu/OAR)

    • For each term, faculty must complete and send OARs 48 hours after College course evaluation results are available.

     

  2.  All faculty seeking a general education Foundations and Skills or Perspectives attribute tag must submit a proposal to GEAR.

    • For Winter term and Spring 2021 courses, only completed proposals received by the GEAR chair by 5pm on September 30th will be considered.
    • For Summer 2021 and Fall 2021 courses, only completed proposals received by the GEAR chair by 5pm on February 15th will be considered.
    • Send proposals to the GEAR chair at: gear@catawba.edu.
    • Proposal forms are located on the T: Drive (T:\COMMITTEES\GEAR\GEAR Attribute Proposal Forms).
    • Honors courses: Submit GE attribute proposals when submitting course proposals to Honors. Honors Program Director and GEAR chair will coordinate to place proposals on GEAR agenda.
    • New courses in Catalog: Curriculum and full faculty (when applicable) must approve new courses before GEAR will consider GE attribute proposals.

     

  3.  During this academic year, GEAR will review OARs submitted during the three previous academic years for the following general education attributes:

    • Historical/Social;
    • Non-Western;
    • Second-Year Writing; and,
    • Wellness Activity and Literacy.

     

  4. During this academic year, GEAR will also complete a summary report, based on all OARs submitted during the three previous academic years, for the following general education attributes:

    • Historical/Social;
    • Non-Western;
    • Second-Year Writing; and,
    • Wellness Activity and Literacy.
