Change in Catawba Athletics’ Leadership for 2021-2022.
Effective May 31, Larry Leckonby, who has served as Director of Athletics since June, 2014, will depart Catawba. Craig Turnbull, Senior Assistant Athletic Director and Head of NCAA Compliance, will serve as the Interim Director of Athletics.
During Mr. Leckonby’s tenure, Catawba’s student-athletes have been successful both in and outside of the classroom. During each of the last twelve semesters, student-athletes earned better than a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Eleven teams across four sports earned South Atlantic Conference Championships. Two teams participated in a College World Series, and one finished as the National Runner-Up.
Mr. Leckonby oversaw major facilities renovations during the last seven years. These renovations included the first major renovation to Goodman Gym since opening in 1970, new Abernethy Hall locker rooms for volleyball, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball, installation of field turf, sound system, and video scoreboard in Shuford Stadium, construction of two new tennis courts in the Johnson Tennis Complex, and addition of a three court Beach Volleyball and recreation complex.
Leckonby also the past four years helped OUR Catawba Chiefs Club grow in membership and funds raised.
Good luck to former Catawba Indian, Peyton Williams, as he is assigned to play for the Augusta GreenJackets (Single-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves)!
