Greetings friends.
We invite you to join us to remember & honor Bill Haggerty for his dedication, service,
enthusiasm, caring. Coach Haggerty ‘79 died June 25, 2020. He was positive and hopeful
throughout his two year courageous cancer marathon. We miss Bill. Let’s honor his memory by creating an endowed scholarship to support future Catawba student athletes.

Bill was a loyal Catawba promoter, supporter, booster. He was a Catawba athletic program “fixture” and constant presence at Catawba for 29 years; always going above and beyond expectations: always giving his all.

He was coach, recruiter, camp director, guide, planner, organizer, friend. He was generous, kind, helpful, involved, hardworking, intense, competitive. He loved athletics. He loved connecting with people. He loved Catawba.

Bill changed work directions in 1984 when he left a successful sales job to be the head women's basketball coach at Catawba. He inherited a struggling program. By his second year, Bill had turned the program around. The team had a winning record and Bill was voted Carolinas Conference coach of the year.

After 3 years, Bill was recruited to be the assistant men’s basketball coach. He was assistant coach from 1987 until 2013 working with coaches Sam Moir and Jim Baker. Coach Haggerty added head coach of the men and women’s cross country teams to his responsibilities in 2000.

Bill coached ln over 1,100 events at Catawba. He recruited 260 student athletes. An amazing 96% of his recruits graduated. Maybe you were one of those very successful and capable student athletes given an opportunity because Bill saw potential in you. Mike London, Salisbury Post sports editor recently wrote, “ Bill had good humor. He was hard-working, loyal, smart, and generous to a fault,” Yes, we agree. Bill was an outstanding and unique person sharing his time, energy and talents to help others.

The endowed scholarship will celebrate Bill’s life of service and dedication to the Catawba sports family and community, It will be established in memory of Bill and in honor of him and his his wife Carolyn.

We invite you to give to the scholarship. You will be remembering Bill, helping future student athletes and supporting Catawba. That’s a real win. Thanks for remembering.
