Catawba Women’s Soccer 30th Year Celebration

We are celebrating 30 years of Catawba Women’s Soccer. Since fielding its first team in 1990, Catawba has won three South Atlantic Conference titles, six SAC Tournament Championships, a NCAA regional championship and have made seven appearances in the NCAA post-season tournament.

Catawba has been ranked in the national NCAA poll over 12 different seasons and earned its highest ranking of #7 in the nation in 1998.

Eight times, Catawba has produced the SAC Player of the Year with nine league Freshman of the Year. A dozen players have earned All-America honors with four Academic All-Americans.

Catawba Men’s Soccer 1990 & 1991 Championship Team Reunions:
Former players came back from Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, and Texas.

We welcomed back two special Catawba Men’s Soccer teams, the 1990 and 1991 squads, who excelled 30 years ago. Both teams went undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference, won NAIA District 26 titles and earned a berth in the NAIA National Tournament.

The 1990 team, led by All-Americans Gerard Gregoire and Mick Wakeman, went 21-6-1, setting a school record for wins in a season. In addition to the conference and district titles, the 1990 team won the first-ever South Atlantic Conference tournament.

The 1991 team was led by All-Americans Craig Morton and Mick Wakeman. They posted a record of 20-5. The team was the most prolific scoring team in school history, notching 88 goals over those 25 matches, while allowing just 20.

Thanks to former Catawba Men’s Soccer Head Coach Peter Broadley for helping to support OUR Catawba Chiefs Club. Coach Broadley was the head coach from 1990-1997, coaching 168 games (104-53-11) and winning seven championships.  He is one of only two men’s soccer coaches to win over 100 games - the other is also a current Chiefs Club member and Catawba Athletic staff member, Craig Turnbull (114).

Special & Featured Events

Just a little background information on the Patsy Rendleman Invitational Golf Tournament and the Richard Rendleman Invitational Golf Tournament. Both tournaments are played at the Country Club of Salisbury - the women’s tournament in the fall and the men’s tournament in the spring.

The women’s tournament is named in honor of Patsy Rendleman, class of 1947. Mrs. Rendleman has been a member of the Catawba College Board of Trustees since 1975 and is an exemplary community leader and avid golfer. She was instrumental in starting the Catawba Women’s Golf team in 1999. She has won 20 club championships, is a past president of the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association, and also help start the 1st Tee program at the Country Club of Salisbury. She has two career holes in one. This will be the 15th year for the Patsy Rendleman Invitational.

The men’s tournament is named in memory of Richard Rendleman, class of 1941. The Catawba MVP award for golf was name in honor of Richard Rendleman in 1988.  Mr. Rendleman was an outstanding golfer for many years and recorded 11 career holes in one. A four-year golf letterman, 1938-41, he helped lead his team to 9-4 record in 1940, qualified for U.S. Open Championship 1948, advanced to third round of U.S. Amateur 1951, Salisbury Country Club champion five times, Salisbury CC Labor Day Tournament champion six times, Grandfather Golf and CC champion twice, Elk River Golf Club champion three times, twice scored six-under par 65 at Salisbury CC, and a charter member of the Catawba Chiefs Club.  Mr. Rendleman played collegiate golf at Catawba and was inducted into the Catawba Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. This will be the 27th year for the Richard Rendleman Invitational Tournament.

Both Rendleman invitational golf tournaments usually have around 25 teams playing in the tournament which serves as a fundraiser for both Catawba College Golf teams.
