Chiefs Club Board Members from 2018 rotating off the board (David Patterson is second from the right).

We learned this weekend that Chiefs Club member and Chiefs Club Board member David Patterson ‘72 passed away. His daughter Michaela Patterson ‘21 reached out to us on Saturday to let us know and to share that a memorial service will take place on November 29th.

David was a very loyal supporter of OUR Catawba Chiefs Club for the past 30 years, as well as a very dedicated and active Chiefs Club Board member. During the past five years that I have been working with the Catawba Chiefs Club, there were countless times David called me to ask if there was anything he could do to help out. He was always willing to help with our special events and support those teams that needed that little extra.

One of the most special times I recall with David was when he surprised his daughter Michaela with an endowed scholarship in her honor this past April. The other thing I remember about David was that he was always early - really early. But, when he showed up for our Chiefs Club pregame hospitality an hour early, he always asked how things were going and if I needed any help.

He was definitely was of the good guys for Catawba College.

Below is a message from his daughter Michaela:
Just wanted to let you know that the memorial has been set for Monday, Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. located at Shiloh Reformed Church (100 S Main St, Faith, NC 28041).

Whoever attends is welcome to wear a plaid shirt or a flannel in honor of dad because he loved his flannels. He did not like wearing a tie, he referred to them as a noose.

The family of former Catawba Football player Hazel Richardson ‘94 presented the flag that was flown over Afghanistan by former Catawba Football/Lacrosse player Ian Brinkley '96 during his service as a helicopter pilot in Afghanistan.

It was a very special event: Attending the recognition were Ian Brinkley’s mother and son; Hazel Richardson’s wife, son, daughters, and grandchild; Catawba Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Peter Bourque; former Catawba Head Football Coach David Bennett; and several of their Catawba teammates.

From Dawn Brinkley:
Thank you for allowing me to share a moment about one of my personal favorite student athlete/scholars to ever come out of Catawba, my late husband Major Ian ‘Moto’ Brinkley. Also known to many of the alumni, teammates & coaching staff as #43, Ian was born and raised in Rowan County and attended East Rowan HS. Whatever he set his mind to, he would get it done with an "awe shucks" sense about him. He had his bags packed for attending UNC Chapel Hill hoping for a walk-on slot. Instead, better things happened - he was recruited by Coach Bennett to attend Cat-U to play and also received the President’s Scholarship. He loved every minute of playing at Cat-U. He was conditioned so well that he excelled at Officer Commissioning School for the Marine Corps, mentally and physically achieving the top of his class. He was also prepared to enter into The Basic School with the same skill set and determination to earn it. The very same day he graduated from Cat-U he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the USMC at Catawba's Chapel. He always wanted to fly and when he went to Pensacola to earn those wings of gold, he was often teased by the Ivy leaguers, the Naval Academy graduates who would ask “what is a Catawba, is that an online school?“ Ian being Ian, he would take the jokes in stride but he was - once again - laser focused. He graduated #1 from Naval Flight School Pensacola with his choice of aircraft. He chose wisely - he got to fly the SuperCobra. I once asked, why not fly jets? His reply: why fly at 30,000 feet if I can protect people on the ground at 300 feet? That was Ian, always wanting to protect those he served with.

I can say Ian may have left Catawba, but Catawba never left him. He chose to be Gunfighter 43 (his Catawba Football number) and Rocket 27 (his Catawba lacrosse jersey number). When he learned of Hazel Richardson’s illness he was very upset, as were many teammates. He was in Afghanistan. While there he flew a flag in his aircraft in honor of Big Haze to be presented today with love from the Brinkley family. Lisa, he thought the world of your husband and your family. Thank you for attending today and accepting this flag on his behalf.

To the lacrosse family - Coach Bourque - I loved when he talked about you approaching him to play during the first season of lacrosse at Catawba. He said, "Man, I had no idea what I was doing but it was fun!!!" It meant a great deal to have your full support, your wife Anne Marie’s support, and the whole Catawba Lacrosse program cheering him on. Because of your wife, several people showed up to Catawba to swab into the "Be The Match" donor program. Because of Ian, over 6,500 people around the world are now in the registry. Read More

At Catawba there was a brotherhood only unmatched by his military family. Many Cat-U brothers and sisters circled the wagons during his illness and made the journey to visit with him, call him, be with him in his final days, and attend his burial at Arlington National Cemetery. There are no words to describe a love like that but I am still in awe of what a special group of friends he made over 20 years earlier.

To all alumni here, to all teammates here, to all the coaching staff here: thank you sincerely for being a part of what made my fella into a bright star. He is no longer with us in the flesh but he is in all of our hearts, so he will never be forgotten.

My very best - may God bless you all,
Dawn Brinkley

Special recognition was pushed back a couple of years but the one and only Catawba Tennis SAC Championship team had their team reunion to celebrate their 2001 SAC Tournament Championship 21 years ago. Patrick Parr, a member of the 2001 Catawba SAC Championship, is in Japan and could not make it back for the special event. He did forward me a letter that he wrote after the team won the 2001 SAC Tournament Championship. It is very special to us to have this:
