brighstart.PNGMusic, Book & Story by Steve Martin; Music, Lyric & Story by Edie Brickell

Inspired by a real event, this bluegrass musical tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ‘40s. Literary editor Alice Murphy enters a relationship with a young soldier just home from World War II. Inspired by the young man’s stories, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past — and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives.

From award-winning screenwriter and playwright Steve Martin (Picasso at the Lapin AgileRoxanne) and chart-topping singer-songwriter Edie Brickell (The New Bohemians and The Gaddabouts, Solo) comes an American musical inspired by their Grammy Award-winning collaboration “Love Has Come For You.” Bright Star features nearly 20 songs—Bluegrass and Americana with a touch of rock—and tells a beguiling tale that unfolds in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina between 1923 and 1945. Billy Cane, a young soldier just home from World War II, meets Alice Murphy, the brilliant editor of a southern literary journal.

Propelled by an ensemble of actors, musicians and dancers, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion, beautiful melodies and powerfully moving performances. Bright Star is an uplifting, humorous and emotional theatrical journey that holds you tight in its grasp and is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful. Nominated for 5 Tony Awards (including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book).
