The 2016 West Scholar Cohort made up of freshmen Carly Boileau, Carissa Cash, Taylor Cielo, Jameson Clanton, Branden Davis, Brittan Hager and Ashley Stencel; sophomore Daniel Morrison; and junior Jacob Crews went on a fall retreat to the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord on October 23-24, 2016. They were joined by senior West Scholar Madison Sides.
The West Scholars were also joined by Dr. Karen Lucas, Director of the Ritchie Academy for Teaching, Teresa Weddington, Administrative Assistant to the Academy for Teaching and Dr. Cyndi Osterhus, Professor Emeritus.
Students arrived at the Great Wolf Lodge and participated in several teambuilding activities led by Dr. Osterhus. After lunch, students enjoyed the ropes course, miniature golf and the water park. After a full day of activities and dinner, we traveled to Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte and enjoyed a delightful magic show called "The Illusionists."
On Monday, October 24th students were involved in more teambuilding activities with Dr. Osterhus followed by a wonderful school visit to Central Cabarrus High School's STEM program. For our freshmen, this visit was their first experience as prospective teachers at Catawba and proved to be very positive as many students came away considering a career in a STEM classroom.
After the school visit, we enjoyed a visit to the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte where we were able to go on a guided tour around the plane that pilot Sully Sullenberger landed safely in the Hudson River after geese flew into the engines. Students also saw memorabilia from the passengers donated to the museum. Students enjoyed touring the rest of the museum and looking at the many planes housed there.
Students ended the retreat with a teambuilding session with Dr. Osterhus and were able to reflect on how they had bonded as a cohort through their experiences on the retreat.
