shaw.jpgHello there. My name is Katlyn, I am a sophomore at Catawba College, and I am your stereotypical musical theatre major. Just one look at my computer or the way I carry myself, and you will quickly see just how passionate I am about it. I listen unapologetically to mainly showtunes. I tap dance in the hallway. I sing on the way to class. I monologue in line at the cafeteria. There is this feeling of bliss that just consumes me when I step onstage. This is nothing that I really have to explain though. Just ask any of our theatre majors and they will talk about the exact same passion.

I started college last fall and I quickly fell in love with the people and the program here at Catawba. I made close friends very quickly and within a week it felt like we were already becoming a family. At first I was a little intimidated by the upperclassmen, they are so talented. I soon found, however, that my intimidation was unnecessary. They welcomed me and were ready to work and learn with me, as well as teach me the tricks of the trade.

I had a very eventful Freshman Year. I joined the Improv Team as well as dance ensemble. I was also cast in two shows: Fresh Faces and Dead Man's Cell Phone. I even got to assistant stage manage the Keppel show, Huck Finn the musical! I made tons of friends, and grew as a person exponentially. I learned so much about performance (acting and movement) as well as what goes on back stage. I took stage craft, beginning acting for majors, analysis of dramatic literature, and foundations of movement in addition to my general education classes.

This year though, I am hitting the ground running. I have the privilege of being able to choreograph for the dance ensemble this semester! In addition to choreography I am also dancing in two student choreographed pieces. I am taking tons of interesting classes (Playing Shakespeare and Interpersonal Relations are my favorites so far!) and working in the management shop for the theatre department. I am also looking forward to starting rehearsals for Legally Blonde in just a few short weeks.

If you think I sound busy you would be correct. That is okay though. I can't think of any other way to live my life.
