I know that many of you are counting down the hours until you are home with friends and family, and can take a break from college life. The thought of not having to divide your time between classes, sports, organizations, and homework assignments has to be exciting.
You deserve a break! And, I highly encourage you to take advantage of the time you have off.
Use this time over the break to invest in your mental health (final exams can be stressful!). Go visit your friends and relatives whom you miss, but also carve out some time to make a one-day investment in you.
A one-day investment is when you set aside one day to rid yourself of distractions and focus on your future. Use that time to start researching the companies you would like to intern with this summer. Reach out to people to schedule an Informational Interview, or join the Catawba Professional Alumni Network on LinkedIn. Spruce up your resume by adding any new volunteer or work experiences, and be sure to Google yourself to ensure you have a clean digital footprint.
If you aren’t sure where to start, begin with writing a list of companies where you would like to work or intern. Beside each company on your list, write down the requirements, deadlines, and experience you need to be eligible. Then, work on building a resume, portfolio, or online presence that makes you market ready for these positions. Also, try not to focus solely on one company, apply for several jobs; it’s always better to have options.
If you are unsure, or need help. Save your draft and make an appointment with someone in Career Services. We are here to help you and happy to do it!
Though the thought may seem tedious, it’s all about perspective. If you take one day to invest in your future, you still have 28 days remaining in the holiday break to do all of the other things that are important to you.
Think about it, every success story more than likely began with a one-day investment. Now it’s time for you to work towards creating your own.
Happy Holidays!!! Have a Safe and Productive Break!
